A Tale of Two Beaches

Jason // July 24 // 30 Comments

I first stumbled upon Black Beach, Traigh na Cille to give it the official name, many years ago during a photo shoot for a magazine. Usually deserted and silent apart from the rumble of the ocean, this tiny bay holds a magic all of its own. This morning, at 5am, the only visitors were myself, a Highland bull and a Great Northern Diver, an uncommon seabird.

After creating the oceanic meditation shared previously I returned to catch some of the patterns left behind by the receding tide. Here I share a handful or two of them along with a set from a white beach, Port na Ba, on the northern edge of the island. This bay was made of shells, creating a striking contrast between the two.

The sea at Black Beach is dark, brooding, obsidian, no doubt picking up the mood from the underlying sands, whereas White Beach has an ocean of exotic turquoise and tourmaline. Both hold their own deep appeal.

I've put together a small gallery of the images arranged as a chequerboard. I may even print up something like this for the studio wall at home as a memory of the places.

  • Stunning images! I particularly loved the rock and black sand compositions. Thank you for taking us along on your journey.

    • Thank you Karen. I’m going to make something really good from these when I get home from the trip and will be sure to share the final result.

    • A handful? The selection of images or the bull’s ‘assets’? 😉
Yes he practically pushed past me as I left the van. I didn’t even register in his world as he grumbled his way past me looking for his harem.

      • Strangely echoes my current journey towards full time art, embracing crone, attempting to (probably impossibly) somehow live-with and humanly contain the chaotic flow of Life so exquisitely and groundedly reflected back daily in the beauty of natural things🙏 gosh….

        • Ah yes, the creative journey is certainly a being of two halves isn’t it Suzie. Chaos and curiosity must prevail. 🙂

  • I love it! The contrast between the black and white beaches is stunning. And some of the images in the black ones are just amazing. I wouldn’t mind having some of those as prints on the walls!! Thank you very much Jason. I hope you have a good night’s sleep and am looking forward to sharing your next day.

    • Thank you Veronika. This trip is turning into something quite special for me. Being able to share the beauty of nature in this way has been a dream of mine since childhood.

  • Stunning images Jason. Nature is the perfect artist. I particularly like no.4 on the Black Beach. It reminds me of a bird perched on a rock 😃

  • What fascinating patterns in the sand, I really like the black beach ones, so interesting, sounds like your having a fab time. Sleep well after your very early start. Look forward to what you do tomorrow.

  • I love the contrast of these two beaches but its the dark images that capture my imagination more, such drama, texture and pattern in those that you can just drop into and they seem to connect in an embodied sense.

  • Jason absolutely fantastic love the sound of the waves I feel very energised now.
The Highland bull gorgeous Thankyou x

  • Hello Jason,

I watched ‘Mountains of Mist’ today having caught up with your previous ‘digital postcards’ yesterday. 🙂 I loved ‘The Black Beach Meditation’ especially the lacy patterns made by the sea foam when viewed from above.

I enjoyed ‘Mountains of Mist’ just as much because I loved the roaring wind sound accompanying the wild and rugged remoteness of the mountains.

I like your chequerboard beach image too.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

    • Thank you K. Please do share with White Wolf, however you’ll need to share each linked post as they aren’t yet available publicly, just to folk who opted in to join me virtually on my Mull Meander.

  • Hi Jason I have just managed to catch up with your 5 days it’s great it’s like a little holiday for me to watch and.listen thankyoooo! More poetry please……..
